During a migration of SBS 2003 on a virtual server to SBS 2008 on a physical server. Ran in to an issue with the dual built in nics on the physical server (Dell 2950). The nics would not work consistantly. Finally disabled them and started the migration with a USB nic (only thing we had available, Loooong story).

Everything we tried to do to fix the issue was making it worse. We decided to abort.

I had made a full backup the night before, and a system state backup before running the Migration preparation tool.

When I restored the System state and rebooted it appeared that the system state restore had done nothing. I have done this before on other failed migrations and everything was fine. The only difference in this case is there is an additional domain controller.

Thinking that I had gone insane and made the backup after running the migration preparation tool. I did a system state restore made from the backup of the night before. Same results the SBS 2008 server still shows up in AD. The Role master is still the SBS 2008 box.

WTF?

Are there any messages in the event log??? Are you using NT backup or some other backup software? Does the restore process show that it completes successfully? Btw it is a known issue that dual nics will fail an SBS 2008 migration. This is a very good document to follow:

Since I posted my boss put in a call to micro$oft. Seems that because of the Additional DC you have to do an authoritative restore (which I did). For some reason it did not work. I do not have all the information yet.

Backup software in question was ntbackup of system state, and Ultrabac backup of the entire system and the system state.

I already have the document in question above, we disabled one of the dual nics. still did not matter. even after setup was completed. we could not use either nic as they continuously dropped packets. Dell was no help. We have done other sbs installs with dual and even quad nics with no problems.

Please post back. I would be interested in why the authoritative restore is failing.

As best it was explained to me it had something to do with the new SBS 2008 server being offline.

SBS2008 will not support two active NIC's.
You must diable one in the BIOS if possible.

I have done many migrations and as long as the nics are not connected it does not matter if they are enabled/working. We just put in 2 dual port Intel gigabit nics (only one port of one nic connected) and restarted the migration, it worked fine.

We disabled the 2 broadcom nics. 2008 just did not like them.
