we have a one server 2003 exchange server in our exchange organization now, we want to replace it with two new servers and retire the exisiting one.

we want our 2007 setup to be similar to frontend backend config in 2003. the new servers will be one mailbox server and one more client access, so my question is whether i need other roles installed? hub transport and edge transport. we will never need unified messaging.

many thanks

You must have Client Access, Hub Transport, and Mailbox roles in your org. They can be all on one server, or split between multiple servers.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Why do you want 2 servers when you had one? What are you hoping to gain?

Have you read the descriptions of the Exchange roles and understood them? This will give you more idea on what you need.

thanks 58sniper. i guess i will have one server doing client access and another do mailbox and hub transport.

i have two servers because our OWA and OMA usages are very very heavy so we want to separate that. need to retire the old server because it is no x64. i initially plan to change our existing exchange org to front-end back-end setup because OWA has performance issue. now since we can afford 2007 license, i am thinking about transition to 2007.
am i on the right track?
