I have a 2003 server sp1 and I am tring to connect to a mail server. I can not. I used microsofts portqry tool to query webmail.server.com and it came back filtered but if i query on a xp machine it comes back open. Is there some rules in exchange server that will preven a 2003 server from connecting to reduce spam or something?

You need to provide more detail... in particular...

1. For what purpose are you trying to connect
2. How are you trying to connect... are you try to access shares on the mail server, trying to browse webmail, trying to remotely administer?
3. Is there a domain
4. Are both the mail server and the 2003 SP1 server on the domain.
5. DNS, is it configured? Are both machines using the same server for primary DNS

I dont know how to reply to this. The exchange server and 2003 server and on different networks they are not part of a domain together. They are connected over a rv042 linksys with the hardware vpn enabled. dns is configured on the 2003 server. On this 2k3 server I cant even set up outlook i get a error that refers to port 25 being blocked by the provider. I checked with the provider they are not blocking the port. Xp machines on the same network can access the webmail as well as the providers email services. The firewall on the server is off. I am kind of at a loss. i cant telnet to webmail.server.com over 25 and like i said microsofts portqry tool shows that it is filtered on the exchange side when i run it from the server but if i run the qry tool from a xp machine it shows open.

If the two servers are on disjoined networks and are not a part of the same domain, you are going to have an impossible time configuring Outlook on the 2k3 server to use the exchange server.

For the clients NOT on the same network as exchange, your options are this...

1. Use OWA (Outlook Web Access)
2. Put them on the domain that the Exchange server is on

For clients in the same network as Exchange server

1. Make sure workstations are using Domain Controller as primary DNS server
2. You will be able to use the Exchange server for Outlook.
