I have a situation with an existing functioning local area network setup as a single forest, single site, with (2) Windows 2003 Standard servers both with active directory install. As it is, the first server (server #1) has AD installed and is the “main” AD server as I understand it. It contains the user profiles and I think a thing called the “global AD database?” The second server, server #2 also runs AD as an “additional” AD server and can be used to manage AD Domain, Sites, Computers and Users etc. as can the first one.
Server #1 the main AD server is a much older box, slower processors, minimum RAM etc. I want to push all AD functionality from server #1 to server #2 and eliminate server #1 altogether. I will then add a new server as later as an applications and database server after the above is completed. I’ll also add after the fact the AD functions to the new server for backup/fault tolerance purposes for AD. Is there standard procedures or “look out and don’t forget lists” for replacing or changing how AD and AD server roles are within this type of environment?
I sure don’t want to make a change and then find out that I have messed up the users accounts, profiles, their saved data or how they access it, security etc. Some one told me that everything had to be demoted, then promoted, the re do this and re do that.
Thanks for any help on this one!
