Hi all,

Need some help here. I have moved myself to a new position in the Netherlands, and we have a small problem. We have a branch DC and a Branch Exchange server.

The DC installed a windows update, and after the reboot, it refuses to log in, it gives an error of a service or driver failed to start correctly, then sits at preparing network connections for as long as it feels like.

We have tried to log on via Directory Services Restore Mode, but none of the administrator passwords work. None of the network or local passwords work at all. We have promoted our exchange server to be DC and DNS, but the big problem is being unable to get into the server. We do not want to rebuild this server, we want to get in and repair the damage. Any Advice?

the account you are trying to user for Directory Restore Mode; is it an Enterprise Admin account?

If not, then take an image of the server.

Restore the SS to a external media drive or if small enough, put it on a CD.
Then, restore a SS backup before your issue(even without being in DRS) from the media.

otherwise, build a replacement server and drop the SS on that.

Use computer management from a workstation, manage remote computer and use name or IP of server. Check event log.

Or try hoiking out the power plug and restarting it...
