Maybe I haven't played enough yet but here's the situation.

I packaged a runtime (2003) because I have users running office 97 because of DAO code in other databases.

When the runtime is run on the computer, it picks up the Access 97 install, uses that executible with the runtime switch and does not install the runtime.

Naturally, Access 97 can't open the 2003 database and error message(s) are generated.

I'll let y'all know if I have any luck... Hopefully someone has figured this one out already?

Dear lameid,

Here is a best guess on my part.

1) Access 97 is installed
2) Your install procedure is installing the runtime version of Access 2003
3) The Association of an 'mde' and 'mdb' remain pointing to the Access97 exe file. (This is good/correct)

So, unless you have a 'Shortcut' that opens 'Access2003, with the runtime switch and your target App, you will have problems.

Here is a example of this:
"C:\Program Files\OfficeXP\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE" /excl /runtime "C:\PROGRAM FILES\Your Folder\YourApplication.mdb"

You need to start the 'Runtime' copy of Access.

Hope This Helps,

At first I didn't think the runtime was being installed because I couldn't find it in a folder tree that makes sense.

A search for Msaccess.exe, turned up the file in the ...\Microsoft Office 2000\... tree structure which exists for Outlook 2000. Of course it existed in an appropriate Office11 sub folder. Since we install Office 97, we also change the default "Microsoft Office" folder to include the version number. Because Outlook 97 is the 'beta' version of Outlook (not technically but anyone that used it knows what I'm talking about), we obviously won't run it. So we run Outlook 2000 because Exchange 2000 includes it. That explains the existince of the Microsoft office 2000 folder. Why the installation package is picking up the last installed office folder for the runtime instead of a default, I don't know. Anyway, runtime found problem solved and I hate Microsoft's crummy documentation even more.

Is it possible to install Access 97 Runtime that can
be used to execute Access 97 runtime for any Access 97
application?

I was able to do the equivalent of the above with Access
2000, but I'm not seeing the option with the Office 97
Developer's CD.

I would like to avoid having to create a separate setup
for each Access 97 application.

You can use any appropriate Runtime version to open any appropriate database version. You could probably even include the extra database files and appropriate shortcuts in one install package. I'm not sure how you would manage getting the shortcuts where you want them but it should work all the same.
