Some basic assumptions which I hope to confirm (or find the correct answer). Just trying to make sure I have the right information.

1. RS 2008 requires SQL 2008.
2. RS 2005 requires SQL 2005.
3. RS 2000 requires SQL 2000.
4. Any of the RS versions can use any of the SQL versions as a datasource.
5. Also, it is my understanding that RS 2008 no longer requires IIS.

Any clarification will be appreciated.

I'm not sure about #4, but the other 4 are correct. #5 was really pushed as a new feature in 2008 by Microsoft.

Thanks for the reply, that helps.

No problem. Glad to help. For #4 I'm sure you can go backwards (SQL 2008 calls SQL 2005 stored procedure), but I doubt it's the other way around.

By "datasource" I assume you mean the source of the data the report is based on. If that's the case, then it shouldn't matter at all. Anything you have a data access driver for should work. This includes SQL Server as well as other databases.

If you're talking about the metadata SQL Server database which SSRS uses to store report definitions, then it's probably best to stick with the same version for SSRS and SQL Server. I did at one time use a SQL Server 2000 database for the metadata repository for an SSRS 2005 installation without issues, but I'm not sure if it is officially supported or even advisable to do so.

Thanks to both of you for your help. Yes RiverGuy, that's the datasource I was referring to.

#4 - definitely can use any of the servers to retrieve data from - I regularly get data from SQL Server 2005 using RS 2000.

The only constraint is the server that the ReportServer resides on.

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
