Hi

I recently installed a 2003 domain, or at least I thought I did. If i run gpresult on anything it tells me the domain is a 2000 domain.

There are no 2000 servers in the domain and never was, the domain now has about 12x 2003 member servers and the DC's are also 2003. Theres also a few 2008 members.

1) why isn't it 2003? What did I miss?
2) how do I change it to 2003? Please don't point me at the MS doc kb325379 it! :)

Is there a simple answer here or are we talking a major deal to run it as 2003?

Thanks

That is fine, there is nothing to worry about here. From this
In the sample output below, you will notice that GPRESULT tells me that my test machine is connected to a Windows 2000 domain. In actuality though, I am connected to a Windows Server 2003 domain. There isn’t a single Windows 2000 Server on my network. It’s just that the tool was developed prior to the release of Windows 2003.

As Davetoo says ensure that you have upped your functional levels to W2K3 (assuming of course that you have no more 2000 DCs in place) and then relax....

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

hehe thanks guys - one problem though...

If i go to "raise functional level..." it says I am "2000 mixed"

Can I simply raise it to "windows 2003 server" without issue?

Thanks

As long as you have no NT4 or windows 2000 based domain controllers, ie you only have windows 2003 domain controllers then you can up it to windows server 2003

thanks - but why isn't it already that? what did i miss?
You can have a star tomorrow after I try it and my domain hasn't collapsed lol :)

Because by default it will go into 2000 mixed...i.e. it will put itself into the safest mode it can, and leave it up to you then to raise it to whatever level you'd prefer it to be, as long as you can. Since you only have 2003 DC's and won't need to introduce any 2000 or NT boxes, then you can raise it to 2003 without issue.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

ok thanks guys

Have a look at the MS doc kb325379 and you will see why so paranoid!
