I am about to insert the disk and go.
I have done forest and domain prep.

But I want to make certain that the upgrade is as seamless as stated. the reason I ask is I also have DHCP/DNS/WINS running on the single W2K AD controller. It has all FSMO roles.

I want to be sure because I have EX2K3 running on W2K3 and I don't want to risk losing AD and spending the weekend doing a long and nasty recovery.

Other than a tested backup plan (including original media!) there's not much else.

I would recommend getting another box up for a couple of days and transfering FSMO roles there first, then upgrade, then move the roles back.

I've done the in-place upgrade several times, haven't had a major problem yet.

As stevehewitt said, make sure you have a good backup (with system state).
If you have another box you can transfer FSMO roles, it's probably a good idea.

Of course, assuming this is a production environment, do it on a weekend. Major changes like this I like to start on Friday night or Saturday morning, so that if something does go wrong, I've got the maximum amount of time to fix it before Monday morning.

One other thing, after you're done, run another backup with the new system state. If you try to restore the old system state, you'll have problems.

I've done many such upgrdes with no problems. I do want to note that Microsoft doe snto recommend transferrign the schema role around and transferring the RID master can have adverse affects if you are creating a lot of objects frequently in AD. I would leave the roles where they are.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
