On our network the PDC and all the BDCs are running NT4, I want to add a new BDC which is running 2000 server, that will everntually become the PDC, but when ever i try setting up Active directory, I get this error message :

The domain "Domain_name" is not an active directory domain, or an active directory domain controller for this domain could not be contacted.

how do i get around that, is there a knowledge base article out there that deals with this

thanks

Thanks brontosaurus, what would be the best way to go about making this new machine be the PDC, while still keeping current user accounts, groups etc. Would I need some sort of Migration tool?

upgrade existing PDC to W2K (leave BDC offline in case of disaster), then join the new server to the AD domain as a second DC. Once replication is running well, move all roles over to the new box, and demote the original to remove it from the domain.

W2K won't act as a PDC in the sense you mean either. W2K are DC's, no more PDC's or BDC's. Glen A. Johnson

we are a small company of 25. what we did was just setup a new W2K Server with AD then connect them to our existing network. I then added the users. Doing this, you know that you are starting from fresh install.

Just make sure that all the username and password on the old server is the same on the W2K server. By doing this they can just go back and forth to all files being shared on both servers.

Then we assigned all computers to the new domain/server...

Like I said, we are a small company.
