I have Aloha POS running on 2000 Server. Credit cards running on High speed. All is fine until the router locks up. Backup modem is installed on Com 1. Error in credit card software shows "failed to initialize Com 1. Under device manager com 1 shows up ok. I need to update driver and this seems to work for a short time. At some point something is "blowing out the port" Not sure what. Does anyone have an idea of what can just make a working com port suddenly not work. Also, any recommendations on a good reliable router? This site is using Lynksys Etherfast and after googling it found lockups to be a common problem with this type.

So let me get this straight

You have a POS device that connects via ethernet and via modem for backup (how is it connected to the server?). When the high speed internet router freezes, your modem hangs...
Is it possible your POS and modem are sharing the same COM port/IRQ?

Let me try and explain...
The POS is not a device it is software installed on the Windows Server. The system processes credit cards using high speed which is the dsl modem and a router. I have a modem backup just in case the high speed connection goes down. This is connected to com 1. For whatever reason the router is locking up. The modem backup should kick in to process cards. Sometime during the day the port fails to initialize. At this point I know the router is locked up because the credit cards are attempting to go over dialup. If I update the driver I seem to get the modem to work over the com port again for awhile. I can't tell if that is a result of the router lockup. I hope this makes some sense...

You might try this boot.ini switch...
/NOSERIALMICE:COMx - Disables the mouse port check for this com port. Ports may be separated with commas to disable more than one port. If no serial port is specified then ALL ports will be disabled for mouse devices. If you have a UPS on COM1, you would use /NOSERIALMICE:COM1. More Info MS KB

Do you have the router on a UPS unit ? Most router/firewalls have very small power supplies with tiny capacitors which handle power blips poorly.
