I recently sold a BCM50 to a re-seller with IP Client licenses and NAT Traversal. Their customer could get a 2004 IP phone to register remotely, but there was no audio. I then had the re-seller try to connect to my own BCM50 with a 2004. Same thing, the phone would register fine, but no audio. I had used 2002 IP phones remotely on my own system several times, so I was stumped as to what had changed. All the correct ports were forwarded (7000-7002, and 30000-30099) to my BCM50.

Another customer of mine then called who has recently installed several BCM50's with IP phones and NAT Traversal. So I related my problem to him. He verified that all my router settings were correct. He then mentioned that he quit using the older 2000 series IP phones due to similar problems I was experiencing. He then connected to my system with a 1230 IP phone and it worked perfectly. I then called back the re-seller and asked him to connect to my BCM50 with another type IP phone. He used an 1120E IP phone and it worked perfectly.

So if you experience one-way or no audio with remote 2000 series IP phones, try another IP phone before diving into BCM IP settings or router port settings. It might save you much grief and head banging. [banghead] The 2000 series are getting long in the tooth and starting to fail. I still have an old 2002 IP phone that works fine, but it looks like a matter of time before it kicks the bucket.

I hope this helps.

There are three hardware revisions of the i2000 series phones - phase 0, phase 1 and phase 2. While phase 2 with up-to-date firmware can be used remotely without any problems, phase 1 can have issues and phase 0 won't work. There is nothing wrong with the hardware of the older phones - it's the firmware in these phones that does not properly support certain messages that are used by the NAT traversal feature.

Just a comment about your router setup - you stated that "All the correct ports were forwarded (7000-7002, and 30000-30099) to my BCM50". On BCM50 there are two port ranges used for RTP, but you enabled port forwarding only for one of them. If the BCM50 software selects the RTP port for a call from the second range, you'll get one way audio (or no audio). You should add another rule to your router forwarding table for the second RTP port range.

Interesting, I didn't know about the different phases of phones. I assume the 02 after the NTDU91BC70E6 on my 2002 means it's a phase 2.

I only have the one range (30000-30099) forwarded as that's the only range of ports I ever see being used when I check my router's log, but I will keep an eye on that. Thanks.

You can find information about used ports in EM under Resources - Port Ranges. The RTP port ranges are by default:
28000 - 28249
30000 - 30099

Thanks UCXguy.

I've been banging my head with no dial tone on IP phones for years now and in all this time, I never thought to look at the type of IP phone being used for use across the internet.

I have confirmed what you said by using a 1140e phone that works fine, whereas one of my older I2002 phones has no speech and it has a firmware of 0604DCN, which I understand was the final firmware release for that type.

A star from me today!.

Try this method to update firmware:

So is this only if using NAT Traversal?

Yes. The 2000 series will all work remotely if a VPN is set up.

I read in another thread how to identify the different phases. The NT numbers are as follows for the i2004: 0 = NTEX00, 1 = NTDU82, 2 = NTDU92. I use an i2002 that is labeled NTDU91 (phase 2) and it works fine with NAT Traversal.

I have a I2002 labeled as NTDUC91AC70E6 06 that doesn't give speech when registered, but a 1104e phone is fine. I'm using NAT Traversal.

Element Manager can also tell you which phase it is under IP sets in Resources. i.e 2002_p2

DCO (January 2012) was the last release of firmware for the phase 2 2001/2002/2004.
