Have a site with a 2000 SBS Server. Moving to a 2003 Server, which is NOT Small Business.

Can I keep the Exchange running on the 2000 SBS Server, and have my client computers which will now be a part of 2003 Active Directory, access this Exchange Server? Is there a way to make a trust?

Please always take the time to backup important data and verify that backup, before making any changes suggested.

No you cannot make a trust. You would need to purchase another 2003 Server license and Exchange Server license and setup a new server in the old domain. You could then use Move Mailbox to move the mailboxes and could then decommision the SBS box.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

See number 14, "14. You can't upgrade from SBS 2000 to regular Windows 2003 domain. However, you can upgrade SBS 2000 to SBS 2003, or to Windows 2003 domain by using export/import migration process."

I think the process would be, load Windows 2000 Server then upgrade to 2003 standard.

Thank you both. That confirms what I had thought.

In the end, because the office is so small, I will install my 2003 server, but not run active directory. I will create local users on the desktops, and I have already tested, the 2000 SBS server will let me access their Exchange mailboxes. Eventually the Exchange will go away, but I need to roll out this 2003 server now.
