Hello

We have recently added to new machines with Win 200 Pro
to a network with NT Server, Win98 Clients etc. The problem is network file sharing between Win 2000 and the other machines is painfully slow ie. it could take 4 Minutes to access a file. Has anybody any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance

On the windows 2000 pro change the network settings to 100/full duplex provided you are on a 100base switch. If you are using a "HUB" then get a switch. This is what worked here, don't know why but it did. Let me know if this helps! Tell me more about your network setup too in reply thanks!

First question. Is it only slow when you are accessing the win98 clients from the 2k boxes?

Second question. Are you accessing other clients via after using My Network Places Wizard?

Thanks for your replies

I tried changing the connection to full/duplex but to no avail. What I did try also was another identical Dell box with 2k and it worked fine from the same network point. I did make slight changes on the network config on this one namely choosing custom install but selecting the same options and choosing yes to logon to the PC as Administrator and no to logon to the domain.
However these options don't work for the 1st box. I even tried reinstalling from the dell recovery CD and then reinstalling drivers and services etc.

Answer1&2. No it's slow to NT server aswell. In fact file transfer dosen't work at all. It says Network name unavailable. The only evidence that there is a network connection of some sort is the presence of the other machines in My Network Places. Sage which a network app hangs on any significantg query.
