Have a client that took a major power hit even tho they had a decent liebert ups. Killed the 2000 PDC but had good backups. They had a new server I was ready to install as a terminal server so we used that. Reload 2000 server, AD restore and they are back online. They currently have exchange and citrix as well.

They just bought a new server (dual xeon, dual raid 5) and want to replace the temp with 2003 server but keep the temp 2000 server as a BDC. I know the concept but have never done this before.

Anybody have a quick and dirty writeup on how this is done?

No such thing as PDCs and BDCs.

Extend the schema
Bring the new server online
Promote to DC
install DNS & configure
install DHCP & import data from old server
install AV
....

this has been discussed here many times. A search will yield a huge amount of data for you.

In addition to what Pat has outlined you MAY also want to tranfer FSMO roles IF the old server is to just be temporary. Should also make the new server a GC.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Yep, new server will assume the master roles, the 2000 will be there just for a failover. They were down for one day after losing the dc and a day lost is big money.

Think i'll be upgrading the 2000 server to 2003 too.

So far, not a hitch. Replication took place across 1 gig connections so it didn't take very long. :)

I haven't demoted the 2000 server yet, may wait til next week.

Thanks
