My boss asked me to find out if SQL Server 2000 does live backups. Will it backup a db while the server is running. He read that the standard version will not, but Enterprise will. Can anyone speak to this?

Thanks in advance Jim Lunde

You can create a "Backup JOB" which will backup the db anytime running or not in any version. Then you can backup up this file to a Tape if you don't have a Backup program that can backup SQL live such as Backup Exec 8.0.
I don't have SQL 2000, still on SQL 7 so I can't help with what to do in 2Grand. But it may be very simialr as SQL 7. In Enterprize Manager Open your database then click "Mangement" then "Backup"
then you can create a schedule to run anytime.

there are wizards to help you.

If i understand exactly how sqlserver run it's possible but i never can make this with a big DB also it's not a problem because the backup is too quick and we don't have a real difference for the user !!!
Also be careful test it with enterprise (the standart version can't do this)

You can make 'warm backups' in 7.0 and 2000, regarless of the version.

2000 made some performance improvements over 7.0 that allow better thoughput when users are on the system, but 7.0 works as well... some transactions may be blocked while the 7.0 is backing up, however...
