I wish to deploy win 2000 as my client operating systems (currently we are using Windows 98. The problem I have is with the Windows SAM database - each user logging in needs a local account. I could make a local user account for 2k that matches the novell account (I use this for my own machine) but as my end users "hot desk" this is not an option for the majority of systems. I have tried setting 2k to assume "the same user uses the machine" but this is ignored when I put on the novell client software.

Has anyone found a solution for this that can offer some assistance?

ZEN for Desktops has dynamic local user policies. Basicly when a user logs in a local account is created for that user. You can choose to remove that user account when the user logs off (volitile) or you can leave it there. You can add this user to any default local group you choose.

I haven't heard the term "hot desk" before, do you mean roaming profiles? or a desktop enviroment that does not have all the stupid Internet and Outlook setup stuff that comes up on every new user login? I think your talking about roaming profiles, again, ZEN for desktops can help you with that. Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

By "hot desking" I mean that my users do not have dedicated machines. Instead they jump onto a machine that is free at the time. I basically work for a college with computer rooms. Users come into the computer room and use a machine that is free at that moment. The problem I have is not with roaming profiles or anything like that but with the fact that 2000 pro requires authentication to use the local system.

I am familiar with ZEN but have not played around since in was brokem down into ZEN for Server and ZEN for desktops etc. Is ZEN going to be able to assist with this problem?

Many thanks for your help.

ZEN would definately work for you in this instance. As Provogeek has already said, ZEN has a Dynamic Local User function which automatically creates a local user during login.

All you would need to do in addition to installing ZEN is to install Workstation Manager as part of your Novell CLient installation. -----------------------------------------------------
