200 m cable

here is the scenario:
i have a 24 switch, router (connected to a high speed modem) , then i have a wire runing from the switch to a different floor in a building (about 200 m long) then that cable is connected to another small switch where 2 computers are connected to that switch, now these 2 computers can't see the network, (if i ping a machine in the main floor, the 1 out of five is a good reply)
it seems that the singal is not strong enough , now if i connect that wire straight to one of these 2 computers, it works fine,

so i only have the problem if i connect the second small switch

what do you think the problem is, >> is really because its a long cable, if it is, how would i fix that problem ? do have to get a repeater ? if yes, where is the best place to have it ?

The problem could also be the switch if you say that the problem only occurs when you connect to the switch. You could try out the different ports of the switch with shorter cables.
If the problem is the cable (possible because when you have a cable with that lenght the signal will loose a lot of power because of the resistance of the cable itself. Then you have to split the cable and add a repeater between the two parts of the cable. I think if you split the cable in two parts it should work fine.I had cables of one hundred meters and it worked.

There is a limit of 100 meters (328ft). After that, data loss may occur. What seems to be happening is that your network card is capable of transmitting and recieving with the other switch at the long end, but the smaller switch is unable because for him, the signal is too weak.

In other words, you already doubled the recommended maximum distance. I'm not saying this will work, but a switch acts as a repeater as well, so you could try breaking up your long cable by putting that small switch in between instead of at the end, hence splitting up your cable via 100 meter distances....

so you recomend, if i would put a switch half way , then another switch at the end , that should work right ? so in totall, we have 3 switches, one , at the main floor, then one in the middle of the cable, then another one at the end of that cable that allow us to plug more then one comptuer in.
What do you think ?


See the thing is , we have one wire already runing, and it will be soo hard to run another wire in the wall, but we need to have 2 computers at end

Yup, try splitting it in two by adding a switch in-between, but since that will be at the limit of the 100m, you could still have data loss.

Your next option would be running a fiber, which increases the costs.

You could also consider adding a repeater in the line as well. Sometimes these are a little cheaper, too. The repeater will strengthen the signal and you can decrease the length of each segment.
