2 XP PCs w/ Network can ping and telnet but no browsing 1

I have 2 XP Home PCs networked sharing one internet connection. I can ping from both PCs to each other and I can telnet to an outside ip address from computer2 but I cannot connect to a web site from computer2. I still have full internet connection from computer1 (main PC using cable modem connection). Computer1 has 2 NICs with one connected to a hub and the other connected to the cable modem. The internet connection seems to be working correctly except for computer2 not being able to browse.

Computer1 has internal ip address 192.168.0.1 and computer2 has ip address 192.168.0.2. I have assigned computer1 as the gateway for computer2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

I know the connection worked in the past using Win98SE on computer2. I just installed XP home on computer2 a few days ago from a fresh install. I am just confused as to why I cannot browse.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have had the same problem again and again!! The way in which i solve it is to make sure that both PC's are working on the same Workgroup, by changing the network ID (right click "my Computer", then Computer name Tag) then remove any bridges in the Device manager, and run the wizard again! Also make sure your firewall is set to accept Network commands, or is running as a gateway!

Microsoft do not officially recognize this as a problem.. It is "User Error!!"

Thanks for the help but both PCs have the same Workgroup, there are no bridges, I re-ran the wizard several times last night (even shutdown both PCs after each run), and I am not using the XP firewall (I am using an outside firewall vendor and have allowed all access for the computer2 ip address). I might still be missing something obvious, any other suggestions.

I might be misunderstanding the term "Bridge". I have noticed that you can bridge 2 cards on the same machine but not 2 connections - is this what you are saying to remove. If so then I do not have that setup.

Computer2 shows in the Net Hood properties computer1 as the gateway.

The other thing I have noticed is when I try to access the Workgroup through Net Hood it pops up an error message that reads:

"Workgroup not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
This list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

My account is admin so I don't understand why now this is not working when in the past it did.

Can you ftp to any other computers,try connecting to something like "ftp.microsoft.com".Also try connecting to something like

http://www.nhc.rtp.nc.us:8080/.

If it will connect to the ftp server and not the 8080 port then you know it is one of you tcp/ip network settings and if it will connect to both then it "could" be a setting on your network sharing blocking traffic on port 80.

Ok massive brain fart. I finally figured it out. Thank you for your suggestions they did help me finally open my eyes to something I was missing. After posting the above I took a break from this "thorn in my side" and had a chance to relax. It came to me what I was missing.

The damn firewall!!!!

I had this network setup before with computer2 using win98se and I had several problems with it not wanting to communicate on any given day. It would work great for 2-3 weeks and then just not work at all. Well I had configured my firewall to accept from a range of ip addresses since I had not specified an ip on computer2. If I specified an ip it would not communicate at all.

When I installed WinXP I had specified the ip for computer2 and set my firewall to accept all from that ip. Evidently it does not trust all requests and it masks any requests from a trusted ip even those it does not trust. I disreguarded the firewall as being the problem since I could ping, telnet, ftp, etc. and never thought about it again. Until fighting with the connection for about an hour and a half. I removed the trusted ip from the firewall and tested computer2 again. Got a response of a hit from computer2 and trusted the hit. It still did not work. Just as a hunch I thought I might as well add the ip of the second card in computer1.

That did it. No more problems (so far).
