I have 2 XP pro machines and a linksys cable dsl router. I cannot access one computer from another. When a third computer running Win 2000 was in the Network with them it worked fine. If you go to start run and type \\computername\sharedfolder i get a permissions error. same error when i try to view the workgroup. Please help!!

I take it no Domain Controller is involved, so...... YOu need to make sure you have the EXACTE username and password on each box, once that is done, just share something such as a hard drive or folder and you should now see it.

You don't need matching user credentials if simplified sharing is enabled (which it is by default in workgroup environment - check that it is on both machines, under Folder Options, view tab).

What's providing IP addresses? (manual, DHCP from the router). Can both machines access internet? Ping each other?
What do you get running IPCONFIG /ALL from command prompt (are the IP addresses as expected? Try Ipconfig /release and Ipconfig /renew if not and DHCP server used).
