I have inherited a situation where we have 2 offices in a business centre, which are about 80M away from each other, with several walls and a floor in between.

I know that in theory what I want to do is possible, but I don't know if it is possible with the kit I have.

I have a Netgear DG834GT Wireless ADSL Router connected to an ADSL line in one office.

I have a Netgear WGT624 wireless router in the office down the corridor, and up a floor. We don't want to have to put in two internet connections, and also need some connectivity to a file server in the first office.

Is it possible, to connect the two units together using cat 5, LAN port to LAN port and then let both wireless routers have the same settings such as SSID, WKA-PSK, only one DHCP server, etc, but different channels, in order to have one wireless network cover the 2 offices?

The reason for this is that it wouldnt then mean setting all the laptops up for two wireless networks.

I know in theory that it is possible, but I have not seen anyone do this with the kit we already have. Netgear's technical support pages don't say it will, but they don't say it will not either.

Thanks in advance

Andy

You may think if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Engineers think that if it isn't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet!

What yo need is one wireless router and one wireless access point.
This way you can extend your wireless network to cover the floors without all the hassles of trying to configure 2 routers.

1 DHCP server 1 WEP 1 Eveything including 1 network.

In theorey the answer is yes to your situation and info you have said (i have checked the spec on the web site). set up second router with same wireless setting and insure the dhcp is switched off(you could change the SSID it does not make a difference and channel). it should then gain a ip address from the first router through the cable you have layed... or you can manually set the ip address on the router not forgetting to point to the gateway of the dhcp of the first router.
i have this set up at home with a dlink router for internet and another vonage router (dlink)for phone but also i can connect to the second router to get a ip from the first router.. I also have a AP downstairs which is wired to the first router to boost the wirless in the same principle "BUT ONLY ONE DHCP RUNNING"..

so before you buy a new AP have a play about good luck!!
