Hi there, i'm killing myself overhere trying to figure out how to connect a 2nd router to my first one and keep them as separate networks but sharing the same intener connection.

this is the situation. my office already have a wrt54g router, all pcs are connected wirelessly to it. i want to give access to the internet to visitors but not to see my others computers on the network.

Is this possible using 2 of the same routers????

thanks for the help

nrodriguez,

I have done it with my Linksys and my D-link - Linksys by default uses 192.168.1.1 for the LAN and then 192.168.1.100-199 for the DHCP for that LAN. D-Link by default uses 192.168.0.1 for the LAN and 192.168.0.100-199 for DHCP for that LAN. So you have 2 different subnets - 0 and 1.

All I did was put address 192.168.1.2 on the D-link WAN port and plugged it into LAN port on the Linksys (192.168.1.1) the WAN port for the Linksys connects to the Internet (and gets address from ISP).

Linksys has instructions about connecting 2 routers together but in a quick look I did not see if you can change the range (192.168.1.x) it uses on the LAN.

I am not sure if you change the local address to say 192.168.2.1 then the DHCP pool will change to 192.168.2.100-199 - it seems like it should - just have never tried.

You can find the Linksys user guide here -

The instructions also has lots of info on advanced routing functions for getting routing information between the different routers.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Ciscoguy for the reply. i had the same configuration as u stated.

The linksys come predefined with the subnets that you can use. 192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0
255.255.255.128
etc.

i assigned a 192.168.1.120 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 GW to the wan port on the second router and connected to one of the ports on the first router.

nothing goes thru the wan port everything stop at the lan address of the second router.

If i change the mode to gateway, i can see everything, all the computers on the network, which i dont want to do.

If i change the mode to router then i can't see anything at all, no pc and no internet. i figure that i;m missing some kind of route, but dont know what exactly.

any help??

Thanks

nrodriguez,

Go to the link above and then to User Guide PDF - go to the advanced routing section - I think all you need to do is get the 2 routers to exchange routing information and maybe setup a default route on router 2 that takes all traffic to router 1. Try turning RIP on for both routers - but read the section in the user guide and you should be able to do what you want.

Remember that the gateway for router 2 is router 1 but computers attached to router 2 have router 2 as the gateway.

I hope this helps!

1. In the second router set DNS1 the same as the gateway.
2. Change the LAN of the second router to a different IP range than the first (such as 192.168.2.1).
3. Set the wireless channels seperate on the two routers.
4. Set the SSID names different for each wireless unit.
5. Save each of the configurations as a file for future replacement in case of a necessary reset of the router.
Clear as mud?

The test continues...
