2 Tape drives on 1 SCSI card problem

Hello guys,

Untill a week ago my backup process worked fine. But now we need two tape drives on the same SCSI card and I have some problems. I hope someone has experience in this.

Os: Win 2000 server with Arcserve 9
SCSI card : ADAPTEC SCSI Card 39160 - Ulta160 SCSI

Device1: HP Surestore ultrium 215 ULTRIUM SCSI ID 3
Device2: Freecom Tapeware LTO-215 SCSI ID 6


If I go to device, ArcServe recognizes both devices as :
HP Ultrium 1 - SCSI

When I start a job he calculates the session and then gives this error :
E3719 Unable to write to media (MEDIA=DAILY[S/N:], EC=UNIT ATTENTION:SCSI BUS Reset, drive power lost or media chang)


I've tried changing the SCSI ID's.
I've updated the SCSI card drivers to the latest verion.
I've tried finding other drivers for the Freecom but on the Freecom site they say Windows drivers are sufficient.

If you need additional info please let me know

did you check on :

- SCSI termination and cables all OK ??
- all boards / tape drives of the same type ( LVD or HVD ),
no mixtures ??
- have you seen both drives working properly ( together
or seperately from each other )
Also try to put ARcserve's tape engine in debug mode and see if you can get extra information from there

On that server go to a command prompt and type the following:

tapetest -y

Then cut and paste that information for us to see.

Longer term, be advised that 2 LTO-1 devices on 1 Ultra-160 card is not a good idea, as you will not be able to provide enough data streaming to both drives at the same time to keep them at optimal performance.

Don't use any drivers for the tape drives.

Hello,

The orignal Tape Drive (HP Surestore) still works if I disconnect the SCSI cable of the new tape drive (Freecom).

If I try to backup to the Freecom when Botch devices are connected it starts ok but after 3% it kinda stops doing anything. I think it is going allright but very very slow.

none of the tape drives have a built in SCSI terminator. Could this be the cause of it? But in the past the HP didn't had any problems without a terminator so...

Hope you guys can help me

SOME ADDITIONAL INFO

I did some further testing.
1)
If Both devices are connected the HP works fine and the Freecom stops after a +- 10%.
With stops I mean the backup job just stops, even in the tape log nothing is written.

2)
If I disconnect the Freecom the HP works fine.

3)
If I disconnect the HP the Freecom still has the problem so the FREECOM is the problem. I'm gonne try to find out if the Freecom needs a terminator.
