I have two Sco Enterprise systems with the same system names. One is my main server, and one a backup box. I recently successfully installed network cards in each, and have assigned different IP addresses to each (Remember, same system names, different IP addresses). I have had them on the network individually for testing purposes, and everything is fine. My question is, can they reside on the network at the same time with the same system names without problems?

Also, can I back up from machine to machine (in the middle of the night) under the above circumstances?

And, finally, if the above is possible, can anyone tell me how to do it?

Thanks Everyone.

Joe

I don't see that it should be a problem, except that it would be very confusing for you!

Also, if you are using some kind of name resolution, like DNS, it would have to be updated if you ever have to switch to the backup box.

Normal practice in this situation is to have a floating IP address. You add this IP address as an alias (see the ifconfig man page for details), and if necessary, it only takes a minute to remove the alias from one system, put it on the other, and the users are hopefully none the wiser.

That way you can still recognise the two systems by their own individual names.

Thanks for your tips. In that case, would it be easier to change the system name on one of the machines, and how do I accomplish that?

To avoid covering the subject again I did a quick forum search, and found this thread, which was started by... YOU! ;-)
