Hi

I have connected 2 pcs to my NB3 modem - one's connected via usb, the other connected through the ethernet port.

Both PCs are able to access the internet fine at the same time, but neither machine can contact the other.

Is there something I can do to get the 2 PCs talking to each other?

I want to be able to FTP between the 2 PCs.

Regards
Tony

the modem is not a mixed media router, it is a modem with two ports.

You would not want to network the two workstations in this setting, as both are obtaining public Internet IPs and the security risk is horrendous. Fortunately, most ISPs will block the Netbios broadcast traffic that the scheme would require to work.

FTP, however should work as you cnn easily use ipconfig or winipcfg to see the assigned public IPs on each workstation. FTP does not require a network connection. If you have XP you could use Remote Desktop. For all Windows versions you could use third-party tools such as PC Anywhere, or the freeware VNC variant:

Thanks bcaster

I attached the 2 machines directly together with a cross-over cable, this achieved what I wanted to do.

cheers

A NAT router can be bought for very little (about £30 / $35), it will improve your security, and allow both PCs to co-exist online peacefully without having to resort to crossover cables.
