If you have a parallel port zip drive, there should be a pass through port on the back of that which you can connect your printer to.

If you have a desktop or tower PC with a spare expansion slot and are willing to open it up, something like quicklinx PCIPP1 from will add a second parallel port to your machine for under £30.

i have tried connecting the parrell port to the back of the zip drive but it then comes up with a message saying the printer cannot establish 2way communtication
that is why i could do with a splitter type device unless the way you describe is easier

You could use a data switch, printer to switch with a male to male 25 cable and then the printer to the switch using the existing cable and zip to other side of switch.
Called an AB switch.
2nd parallel port is about the same amount of effort. Probably a little cheaper, but make sure you have an open ISA slot.

Why not disable bi-directional communication to the printer. Look at the properties of the printer, there should be a checkbox to disable bi-directional communications.
