I am wondering how i would go about giving 2 network cards the same IP address.

The system is a win2k Small Business Server I have a intel card and a netgear card.

If this is not possiable how would i go about tweaking network traffic thru the server?

why would you want to give 2 network cards the same IP address? If it's for load balancing, they'd still use different IPs.

What are you trying to achieve? There may be another way to do it :)

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Our network traffic is maxing out on the 1st network adapter. So i placed a 2nd one in however Exchange instant messenger is not working and other kinks and stuff not working properly.

Some cards will allow you to channel them to act as one to increase bandwidth.

But I would first try to find out why your NIC is getting saturated with traffic. How many users do you have?

I would start searching the network for viruses, spy-ware, etc that could be causing all of this traffic. Also, is the traffic coming from within the network or the outside?

I would check the interface traffic on the routers/firewall if you can get to them and see what is actually passing through there.

the multi link trunking I have used was really for increased fault tolerance not increased speed. To increase the speed buy a faster NIC (and Switch)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

We use Adapter-Teaming/Trunking here to increase the speed on the main fileserver.

We initially had a few problems but it was smoothed out fairly quickly. Ensure you have the correct drivers and that they allow you to team adapters.

As a side note: We had 1 dual port card rather than 2 indipendant cards, I do not know how teaming would work with 2 seperate brands of card.

We have about 14 users, they would be accessing the server for our quickbooks datafile, an act database, an access database, instant messenger, exchange and file server.

There are no viruses on the network.

Internal to external traffic seems normal I just have errors on the server more then 500000 bytes per second.
This dissappered when I put the 2nd adapter in however exchange started working funny and IM did not work.

Grenage can you tell me how you setup Adapter-Teaming/Trunking ?

Hi again,

Well it was fairly simple with the card we had. The intel drivers fully supported teaming and it was just a matter of going into the adapter properties and selecting which cards we wanted to use.

I have not had the opportunity to try Teaming with other brands of card but I believe it is done in the same way.

I also imagine only "server class" cards will have drivers that support it.

Grenage did this just show up in the propertys of the NIC?

It did indeed, once the drivers were installed it was all under the NIC properties.
