I have someone that is trying to do the following.

The have two network cards in an XP box. One card is set on a private network of 10.0.0.0 and is used to connect to an internal device.

The second card is configured to work on the 192.168.0.0 network which passes through a switch and goes onto the Internet. If the first card is disabled or unpluged the second card works great it can get on the network, internet etc.

If you have both cards plugged in the 2nd card stays up for about 10 seconds then loses all access, like it just dies, no pings, no internet etc.

Thoughts?

run an ipconfig /all and post the relevant gateway info.

each card has a relevant gateway to its own network
192.168.0.254 for one and 10.0.0.254 for the other

But are both 'gateways' actually gateways to the internet or is there only 1 real internet connection?

Also, what happens if when you disconnect the 192.168.0.x network? Does everything on the 10.0.0.x network behave correctly?

The 192.168. subnet is the one that goes to the Internet. And yes if you disconnect one card the other works perfectly, its when they are both connected at the same time the problems begin

Where is the default route directed to? Try issuing a ROUTE PRINT at the command prompt.

If the default route points to the adapter with the 10.x.x.x address then you might want to change it.

If the 10.x.x.x is disabled then the default route on the other adapter would be used - which might explain why the internet works when the 10.x.x.x adapter is disabled.

That's aling the lines of where I think the problem is as well. If the computer's trying to use the gateway 10.0.0.x gateway (which isn't a legitimate gateway), there could be routing problems.
