Running XP Pro and have had trouble with losing Desktop Background when unclicking Show Desktop Icons. Now a 2-inch white menu occupies the left side of the desktop containing folders titled: Folder Tasks, Other Places, and Details. These are the same options that can be seen at Tools>Folder Options when the bullet is placed in front of Show Common Tasks. Ran Chkdsk to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

Tried a virus scan or spyware scan? Probably not the problem, but you never know.
How about using system restore, to a date before your problems started.

Kestrel1: Thanks. Tried the scans and restore to no avail, but the problem was solved when a friend suggested Kellys-Korner. Specifically, Line 15 at the following address solved the problem: As you will see, there are many fixes at this site.

Glad you managed to get it sorted. I must admit I had forgotten about Kelly's korner. Good site.
