Hi, I'm the new one here. To make it short:
I have to maintain an ISP-Server. It is a RedHat Linux with Plesk-Mnagement software. Obviously Plesk installed and configured the whole WebServices. Nearly all is different as described in my book: "running qmail (Richard Blum)"
I do that for 2 weeks now.

One customer complains, that a message entered at 12:33 50KB was received by all (17) recipients at 14:58. So i am looking for the delay. My messagelogs have names like: mail.err, mail.info, mail.warn. Not like in my book.
I found that mail.info is the best source for investigations.

But i cannot find a notice when the message was entered (by an smtp-session thru a remote client) into the system.
The first entry is at 14:57 " qmail .... new msg", then I can see all (17) delivery-messages.
So please where do i see when and how the message was entered into qmail queues?

As I believe my customer i ask: what was going on that his message was "seen" more than 2 hours after he entered it.

Thanks in advance - and sorry for ma bad knowledge (language & qmail)

Regards

Bogdan

Plesk's implementation of email/qmail is problematic in that it deviates quite a bit from "Life with Qmail" - which is regarded as the best-practices implementation approach to most qmail configurations.

Generally, if you are sending an email to an email server at another domain (run by someone else) then are several reasons why delivery may be delayed:

- their server wasn't answering
- communication problem
- spam control

I'll us an example like sending to yahoo.com which is fairly repeatable.

If you send an email to, say, a dozen recipients at yahoo.com, there appears to be a delivery throttling approach in use by yahoo. This approach is called "greylisting", which is the use of a mail "deferral" error between servers to weed out spam senders versus regular/legitimate senders.

My guess is that your customer was held back by greylisting at the other domain.

1. Thanks for Your message.
2. By my poor english I did'nt explain good enough.

Say "Company" is my client and Bob one of their clerks (at least 18). "Company" pays for Webspace and emailservice on "my" webserver (LinuxPlesk). Bob wants to send a message to his 17 collegues, so he prepares this with outlook and press the Send-button. I thought this starts an SMPT-connection to my server with an authentification to "his" domain on "my" server. I don't think we have a greylist and if, it should not contain the domain of our customer "Company".

Where do i see the start of that SMTP-sesion and where is a logentry that Bob delivered a message to qmail?
After these 2 hours suddenly this message is processed, all deliverys are local to his collegues on that "Company"-Domain. At this moment spamassassin is called, but that takes a second. Within a minute all 17 local messages are delivered. The collegues reported, that they received the message at 14:58

It all happenes on my machine. (except of bob's outlook)

So where can i look to? what can i check? CPU-load ist about 1 to 5 precent.

any Ideas?

Thanks

Bogdan

OK, so you have a LOCAL delivery problem.

You should see the message progress through two logs:

First, when the sender connects to your server and transmits the payload, you should see the message in the SMTP log - whereever that's kept by Plex.

Second, since this is all local delivery, you should see the next delivery work happening in the SEND log - again where ever Plex keeps that.

If you have Spamassassin running, it generally keeps logs also.

You should consult your host or Plex for additional background.
