Hi,
I have desktop with 2 cdroms, one a master and the other a slave.

Do I need to have an audio cable running from both to the sound card or just from the mater?

tia

You need a cable running from each drive to your soundcard (or motherboard if you're using onboard sound) if you want to hear sound from both drives.

i didnt know there was such a thing. that will save me some grief I didnt know i was going to have on a future project.

If your cdroms support digital audio then you can just check this box in the cdrom properties in device manager
and omit the audio cable altogether.

Enable digital cd audio for the cdrom/dvdrom , and you don't need cables (theese are for analoqe sound to the mb).
Device manager - cdrom properties - enable

Yes, you can use Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) as a workaround. See this article for a complete rundown of your options, both advantages and disadvantages:

Personally, I would go with the Y-cable. They are cheap and cause less stress on your system. Now of course, if your system is less than 2 years old, you probably don't have to worry about the extra stress caused by using DAE.

Here's another site for an audio Y-cable if you're interested:
