Help!!!

Some 2.4 GHz wireless interference problem.

My laptop has a wireless PC card and in my store I can use it to connect to the Internet with no problem. But I can not connect it to the Internet from home.
My wireless access point is a linksys 2.4 GHz one and it is in my store and the access point is about 40 meters away from my home, and it is in the distance range.Before I bought the access point I was sure it would be in the wireless distance range while I am home.

After I checked why it was not working from home I found out that the reason was some other 2.4 GHz device was interferencing with the access point.

I tried this to find out the problem. I connected my laptop to the Internet in my store and walked away from my store and to my home.On the way home somewhere the Internet was disconnected and then the radio signal came back again. But it is not the signal from my wireless access point and I culd not even renew my IP address from the DHCP. The signal showed to be excellent at home.But it is the wrong one.

I don't know what the device is. And it could be something in my neigbor's home. How can I solve the interference problem and use the Internet at home?

You might try changing the channel on your wireless nic and wireless router and see if this helps . Also do you have other security paramters such as a unique SSID set up for your machine ?

I am using the default SSID linksys and the default channel which is 6, should I change the channel to 11 or to 1? I will try a unique SSID and a different channel number.

Hi, vipergg, when you mentioned other security paramters, besides the SSID, should I try something else?

I think that the WEP just encryts the data transmitted, but it will not restrict which wireless signal my wireless card should receive. Is my understanding of the WEP right?

What else should I try please?

Robby -

Use channel 1. Use a specific SSID and tie your NIC to it. Use WEP for encryption. If the interference continues to be a problem you can try a couple of other things. Highpowered NIC from companies like Sonicwall or others. This would give a boost from the average of 30mW to 100-200mW depending on vendor. You may need to upgrade the access point also. Case in point is the Cisco 340 AP is a 30mW unit while the 350 is a 100Mw unit.

Cheap Fix Alert!!! Learn how to build parabolic antennas There are many plans on how to build reflectors for the existing AP antennas which would extend the range and block interference that can arrive via the sidelobes. THe easiest one I've seen used styrofoam and some foil. We have links to this and others on our wireless page.

I spent hours trying to solve the problem. But the problem is still there. I am just gonna use the Internet in the store and be happy with it.

If you have a 2.4 GHZ wireless phone, it will interfere with your LAN wireless connection. Microwave ovens also interferes with the connection.

I had the same problem and had to buy a 5 GHZ phone. As for the microwave interference, I set my wireless network to 2.1 GHZ - away from the microwave oven's frequency of 2.54 GHZ.

You can also try and buy a WIFI antenna booster for about $50 to $70 bucks which will boost your signal to about 8 (current antenna configuration for linksys 54G wireless routers are about 2 to 3).
