Hi,

I can't restart my machine with my 1 TB USB HD connected as it causes the reboot to hang on the bios/mobo manufacturer logo screen. If i connect it only when windows has started its fine but it wont start with it connected. Do i need to do something in the bios?

As always - Any help is apprieciated

Shaun

Make sure your BIOS is not trying to BOOT from external devices.

Looks at the Boot Sequence and Make sure either the CD or the internal HD are the first things it boots from.

It might be hanging trying to find something bootable in your external drive.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Most likely you will need to update the BIOS...

there are mainboards out there with Boot problems, when USB devices are attached...

or see if the BOOT order in the BIOS does not have the "BOOT from USB" set to enabled...

Thanks for the replies

I dont think its trying to boot from USB, I cant find anything in the BIOS that inidcates that it is + i can connect other USB HDs - just not the 1TB size one

Not USB HD is in the boot sequence as I cant enter BIOS with it connected

I just updated the BIOS and it still hangs on the logo screen, if I hit DEL real fast it will do the auto detect stuff before entering BIOS but when it gets to auto detect USB mass storage devices it just hangs

Maybe my bios doesnt support a 1TB USB HD?

Any of leads would be apprieciated

Thanks
Shaun

Shaun - Is this a new 1TB external USB drive or is the USB drive in question the one you salvaged in your your other thread? thread751-1532001

If it is the salvaged unit I would say the the USB enclosure may be the source of your problem since in your previous thread you say the drive worked okay internally.

Hey Freestone - No it's actually a 6 month old 1TB Lacie HD and I have a 2TB Lacie too both of which cause the hang on reboot.

The drive in my other post was a 3rd 1TB Lacie HD and the enclosure power failed so I put one 500GB drive internatally the other in a new enclosure which doesnt seem to work! I ordered a second enclosure so we'll se when that arrives

Also I renecntly updated drivers to everything i could think of, mobo, chipset etc but no dice

I take it that it is possible to have a 1TB drive connected at start up without it hanging?

Any last suggestions?
Shaun
