Ok this is the first time I have tried loading XP on a SATA drive and ran into some bumps. When I try to select the option to instal, it gives me the error that there are no drives found and to check conections and power. Do I need to install basic drivers first?

You need to put the SATA drivers (should be on your motherboard's install Cd or on the motherboard's website) on a floppy drive. Then when XP install starts, there's a message saying press F6 if you need to load additional drivers. Press F6 then - and later on you'll be prompted for the floppy with the drivers on.

Some motherboards (VIA i.e.) have tools on motherboard's CD to make floppy with SATA drivers. You will need a blank floppy. Boot PC with motherboard CD inserted and it will ask you if you want to make SATA driver diskette. There will be directions on the screen how to do this.
