please can someone tell me how I can stop a one hour meeting on a Tuesday each week from appearing in my resource useage sheet as .28hr each day?!

1hr task spreading itself over the week

You've probably created a task with 1hr of work and 1 week of duration.
Here's what you should have done:
1. Insert | Recurring task and make certain to change the Duration field from 1d (1 day) to 1h (1 hour) -- or to whatever is appropriate.
2. Insert the column "Type".
3. Expand the Summary task so you can see all the subtasks (the weekly meetings).
4. For all the subtasks, make the type "fixed duration".
5. Select all the subtasks and click on the
Assign Resources button.
6. Assign resources to the task at 100%.
