I'm not willing to spend more money. However I wanted to know if it is actually possiable to run a wifi router with a 1900 switch?

I'm going to be moving into an apartment with a buddy and we are both IT guys. We have about 8 boxs + laptops. Not to mention the other things like 360's.

I'm wondering if i could just go from Modem to 1900, and then put the wifi router on the switch? and just get wifi out of it? ..

Any help thanks!

Yes, you can just plug it in. If you use the uplink/internet/wan port of the wireless box you'll be on 2 different networks but you will have internet access on all. If thats all you want. Otherwise you can just plug into the lan side of the wireless box and be on the same network.

1900 series are only 10Mbps

Of course if your happy with that then cool.
however if you want 54Mbps then its not up to the job unless you have a 100Mbps port on the far right hand side of the unit titled (AX) plug that into the wifi device to prevent a bottle neck across your err . . . MAN ?

If 1900 is only 10Mbps what would be a better switch to get for something like this?

Torturednacho,

You asked -
"If 1900 is only 10Mbps what would be a better switch to get for something like this?"

A Cisco 2950 is 10/100 and they run from $40 to $150 on Ebay depending on number of ports and the image on the switch.

If you don't want to deal with Ebay, Cable and Kits has many different Cisco switches like 2924-XL's and 2950's from $29 on up, these are both 10/100 Ethernet switches -

You said you are using it for WIFI - are you powering the Access Points? Do you need POE (Power over Ethernet) they have Cisco 3500 Series 24 Port PoE Switch, WS-C3524-PWR-XL-EN for $129.

Check out the link, they have lots of different Cisco switches.

Hope this helps!

Well we haven't figure out the setup yet. Since we are trying to figure out if we want a DMZ as well. The once everything is final the setup will be a major deal.
Exchange server,DC01,DC02,2 firewalls,NAS, App server, 2 360's,Wii,PS3, and a couple other randoms. The wifi is for the laptops so we can actually work. It's going to be around 6 boxs plus 2 gaming rigs. So 8 boxs and 2 laptops We have been working on this for alittle over 5months and are about ready to actually start putting it together. -Cross Fingers-

On a lite note, I will actually be documenting everything from start to finish on my webpage. Which We might be hosting aswell. lol
Just tieing up ends and getting the finals. I will be checking out that link thought. thank you

Torturednacho,

Good luck and you might want to do a little research on Cisco switches, that 1900 is at least 6-10 years old, Cisco stopped selling 1900's in 2002 :)

A "major deal" with a 10BaseT switch at the CENTER of it all ??? I would think "being IT Guys" you would want at very least Fast Ethernet if not a GIG Ethernet setup.

Right now my home network uses Fast Ethernet with Cisco 2950 and 2924-XL switches and Cisco Fast 400 hubs but I am working on getting a GIG switch for at least part of my LAN. I will keep the DMZ at Fast Ethernet because GIG will not make a difference from the WAN side over FIOS.

Once again - good luck and once you have your site for the progress - let us know so we can follow!!!

I have a 3640 at work with 10MB for the LAN and the WAN, Gene...lol

But it's just two of us there, all one flat network. Just to be mental, I was thinking about doing something like DMVPN over MPLS, running BGP between networks (actually VLANs in some CatOS switches) and 4-5 layers of OSPF areas in the LAN...muahahahaha...lol.

Oh---and part of it will be DECNET over a CI bus, NOT IP! My boss would fly in and be like, "wtf???"

Burt,

I understand what you are saying :)

At work half my building is Ethernet and the other half is Fast Ethernet but at least all the switches are Cisco Fast Ethernet with GIG uplinks.

My building was built and wired in 1990 so it is not CAT 5e, the cable guys said it was an early version but not the greatest for Fast Ethernet. 10 base T is very forgiving where as Fast Ethernet is not....

And the way it was wired....... at least now ALL new installs are Cat6 done with Panduit and to Panduit specks and all runs from the IDF's to the MDFs are all fiber.

Yeah---I just moved our office into a new building, and I had it wired with CAT6, Cat5e for the FAX only. Since it is all one flat network, and if I do separate traffic into vlans it would be for different server manufacturers (Dell vlan, IBM vlan, HP/Compaq vlan, Sun vlasn, etc.)then...who cares about 10MB in the vlans? It's all just maybe ARP traffic...

the 1900 was just what i have because of my lab setup. I know the 1900 series is old. but its all great stuff to learn on.

Saying the 1900 would be the switch of the network. Was just a generalization. I've been looking at the 2950

Too funny---the sales guy that flies in every month or so and my coworker (I'm his boss) both are unaware that I SPANned the ports in the edge switch (C2980G) and am Wiresharking all their porn site traffic...lol...time for the blackmail call to the wives...muahahahaha...
