1800 series WAN interface question

I want to set up a router on a stick between a 1801 router an 2950 switch.

Looking at the router it has:
- ADSL over POTS
- 8 port switch
- 10/100FE WAN port

Does the 10/100FE WAN port have to used as a WAN port? Or can it be used for what ever I want it to... like a layer 3 LAN port for router on a stick?

I always thought WAN meant WAN as in outside (public) interfaces like the Dialer0 interface for example , do cisco use the term WAN differently?

If by WAN port, they mean its just a port that another network pugs into, could I make the ports on the router anything I want to (LAN or WAN)?

Thanks.

creeping666,

Backup the orginal config and the IOS to a PC running TFTP software and then try it :)

Then if something does not go right you can put it back the way it was both config wise and IOS wise - have seen several questions from people who erased the wrong thing while "playing around" and did not have the IOS backed up :)

I think Cisco is just using the "WAN" term like it is used on Linksys and D-Link routers so that a user with limited knowledge knows where to plug in the cable to the ISP and where to plug the PCs into!!!

But basicly it looks like you have a Fast Ethernet port and 8 fast Ethernet switch ports. Can't hurt to go to that interface and put the "?" in and see what commands it supports!!

Post how it works for others who may have the same question!!

Yea, the only difference on some of the interfaces seems to be the speed. So I thought maybe they might behave differently internally or something.

You can use it for whatever you want. Cisco meant for it to be a WAN implementation. Hell, if you had a DSLAM, a RADIUS server and a phone switch, you could make the ADSL line your LAN if you wanted to...
