I'm trying to repair a Gateway with an 18 GIG drive that is showing itself as full. However, when I search the drive for files I see nothing out of the ordinary. Just the core apps, AOL and Quicken. At best this should have taken 2-2.5 gig.
No pictures, No music, Cleared Temp, Temp Internet Files.
I deleted one 60 mg file just to make space enough to cache, etc..

The next day I booted up 60 mgs free space became 48mg.

Any ideas?

More info please. Operating system? Filestore type? Where are you getting your figures from?

Are you sure its not been formatted FAT16 (max partition size 2GB) by mistake? Use fdisk (win9x/ME) or disk management (run diskmgmt.msc - 2k/XP) to check.

OPerating System is Windows ME, File System is FAT32. I'm getting the figures from the properties of the C:\ under explorer.

Right now, I 'm leaning towards virus. Since I began working on this box, I deleted some files , just to get some room to cache. I frred up about 100 mg.

The next I booted up the PC , the free 100 mgs were gone completely.

So its showing as 18GB capacity on the drive properties? - with nearly 18GB used, and a small MB quantity free?

What are settings for system restore? (ie, is it turned on, what percentage of drive is it allowed to take up).

Have you tried a virus scan then? (online ones available if you've none installed - eg Trend's housecall
