I have a 1608 phone on IP Office 9.0.4 that is going to the main system via vpn tunnel (open vpn currently but have tried other vpns too). 2 Ubiquity ER lites are doing the connection.

Previously (a couple years ago) the phone worked fine then the customer moved their remote office and the hardware sat and was recently reconnected. The firmware on the routers was updated (maybe a mistake). Now the first router gets the RAS gatekeeper request but it doesn't reach the second router. All the usual ALG etc stuff is off.

A 9608 phone works fine (so much easier to use!). Looks like it sends the same requests but they get a response.

Any ideas? I am supposed to try and keep the 1608 phone here if possible.

The phones at the main site are the same and have no issue. Another working 1608 was brought and had same issue.

Thanks!

I guess the question is what is different about the packets the 1608I sends from the packets the 9608 sends?

IMHO the 1600 series phones are crap due to being cheap.
The problem still may be the VPN though because the 1600 phones can't do NAT while the 9600's can and that may be the reason why they work.

I'd look at packet sizes and check the MTU across the VPN.

Fragmentation may be handled differently by the handsets

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at those things...

I ended up just replacing with a 9608 since I wasn't given much time to work on it. Probably we won't install these 1608 phones across vpn connections anymore.
