Hi,

I have a HP LaserJet 4000 that will not print using paper from Tray.
Everytime it attempts to pickup paper from tray 2 it starts to tak it then if you are looking at it from the back, you see it roll back into the tray.

It is a 13.1 error. I have opened all the doors and taken the toner out to look for any loose strands of paper but I cannot see any that maybe blocking the paper feed path.

Anybody else have experience of this error ?

Hi!

13.1 is a Paper delay jam at paper feed area. It recommended to check this:

For 13.1 and 13.2:

1. Ensure that paper trays are loaded properly so paper can feed from the tray.

2. Check the input area for obstructions such as paper in the path, damage to the Registration Assembly, or the Transfer Roller out of place.

You could also try with a different media just in case. If the problem persists you probably have to exchange paper pickup roller or the whole tray 2 pickup assembly.

I have replaced the tray with another that had roller in it.

No joy. I replecd the grey/blue puckup roller as well but still no joy.

The problem in my opinion is with the four "D" rollers behind the grey roller on top, and possibly with the spring assembly which brings the "D" rollers to their home position. It is difficult to explain to someone without photos, so a manual on the machine would be a great investment if you're in the industry and plan to take care of more than a couple of these in your life.

Basically the "D" rollers clip to a plastic axle, which itself clips to the frame of the machine. There are several points at which the mechanism comes disassembled and does not work, but wear on the rubber is usually cleanable with Simple Green and the tires are often re-usable after that until you can get new ones. The newer ones are about 2/3 the length of the old "D" rollers and they actually jam LESS despite having a smaller surface area. I recommend them, they don't cost that much.

NOTE - you should take out the toner and flip the printer up on one side to examine the feed mechanism, and be careful with the white plastic "e" clip which holds a spring to one end of the plastic axle on which the four "D" rollers reside. You DO NOT have to remove the axle to get the four rollers unclipped... but you should examine it and make sure all is in place. Tray one can be your guide since you're not having a problem with it.
