I am running 123R5 in XP professional and it runs fine once it opens. But it takes 7-8 seconds for the computer to respond after clicking the icon. Once 123 has opened and then closed it will reopen instantantly. Have reinstalled several times; always get the same results. This is not a great problem - just a pain in the butt. Anyone out there that can help?

Thanks: richwhip

Hi richwip,

I posted the following under the thread entitled "Is Lotus 123 Release 5 Compatible with Windows 2000" which has been around for a long time, so perhaps is being ignored.

Because these steps will result in "complete" compatibility - including proper screen resolution for which Release 5 was designed, I would strongly recommend ALL 123 Release 5 users adopt this method of launching 123. As the monitor changes resolution, you'll likely hear a "click" sound.

Keep in mind too, that perhaps you haven't yet run into other compatibility problems that will be cured by the following steps.

I'd be interested in knowing how you make out. :)

SOLUTION FOR LOTUS 123-R5 FOR USE WITH WINDOWS XP

I've been able to get Lotus 123-R5 working completely without any problems whatsoever - in Windows XP. Use the following steps:

1) Create a desktop shortcut for loading Lotus 123-R5.

2) Right-click on the desktop icon, and choose "Properties".

3) Under the "Shortcut" tab, opposite "Run", specify "Normal window".

4) Under the "Compatibility" tab, set the following...

a) for "Compatibility mode", check off "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and then from the pulldown, choose "Windows 95".

b) under "Display settings", check off:
- "Run in 256 Colors"
- "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution"
- "Disable visual themes"

c) under "Input settings", check off:
- "Turn off advanced text services for this program".

Click "OK", and you're done.

I sincerely hope this works for "sbgirling" who obviously is in need of a "Lotus 123-R5" solution. And I hope others who have struggled with getting Lotus 123-R5 to work properly will also have their compatibility problems resolved by using the above.

Thanks for the reply, but the suggested setup is the way I have been running 123-R5. It seems to me that the computer is looking for the program in memory since it just does nothing for 7-8 seconds and as soon as the HD starts the program opens. Maybe there is something else I need to change.
Any more suggestions?

I'm another long-time Lotus 5 user. I have so much invested in Lotus 5 spreadsheets now that I can never leave.

I am transitioning (maybe) from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home. Lotus 5 works fine, except for the known problem of not being able to write a text file. :( I guess I'll have to keep my old Win 98 machine just to do that.

And a little annoyance - XP insists on making all my file names ALL CAPS. So, when I look down a directory, I see all my older file names in lower case or Initial Caps, and the newer files in ALL CAPS. ugh. I have tried the Win95 and Win 98 compatibility options on the icon, but no luck with those.

Any other ideas?
