I have an HP 1220c that is attached via parallel cable to a windows 98 machine. When any print job is sent to the printer from any program I get approx 5 pages (there would be more but I cancel the job) on which all that is printed on the pages is one line of miscellaneous letters, numbers and characters at the top of each page. It will print the one line, spit out the paper, pick up a new page and do it all over again. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer and I have also downloaded the drivers from HP and reinstalled those as well and I get the same results.

Sounds like a driver problem to me. I have seen that sort
of thing before. If you are using a generic driver, try
loading the driver from the floppy/cd that came with it or
download a driver from HP and install it.

Some applications seem to have problems with some drivers
(MS Word comes to mind).

There might be something about your problem on the hp site too.

I have tried the driver from HP and I still have the same problem. All applications are having problems and I even tried to print a test page from windows and I get the same thing.

Try a diagnostic page from the printer itself: (Info from the 1220c help file)

1 Power off your PC and printer, and disconnect the printer from the PC.
2 Power on your printer. While holding on to the printer's Power button, press the printer's Resume button 4 times before releasing the Power button.

Your printer should print a diagnostic page.

3 If your printer fails to print the diagnostic page, there is something wrong with your printer. Call HP Technical Support.

4 If your printer manages to print the diagnostic page, reconnect and power on your PC and printer.
5 Open the Printer’s Properties from the Printer control panel and click Print Test Page.
6 If your printer fails to print the test page, call HP Technical Support.

I tried the diagnostic page and it printed out just fine and then I reconnected the parallel cable and turned my PC back on and printed out the test page and the same thing happened again. I had a Windows XP machine that I moved this printer to and it works just fine so it has to be somethng with Windows 98.

Check the page properties in the document settings of word or whatever you use. Fairly common USER ERROR
