Has anyone been successful on running the 1220 or 1230 sets on SIP?

I am planning on using the 11xx cfg. files and Avaya 4.0 SIP firmware to configure these phones for SIP....awaiting them to arrive.

I haven't tried a 1230, but the 1220 works OK, at least on the IP Office platform.

Hi there Biv,

I had an interesting experience with a 1220 I bought from ebay.

It was loaded with some "other" type of SIP firmware from non Avaya/Nortel call server. The ringtones and features were completely foreign, and not quite as nice as the Nortel feature set ringtones, etc.

I spent about 3 hours trying to get this phone to work correctly.

I first had to find the foreign phone firmware's buried Network TFTP provisioning address. Finally found it, and downloaded the Nortel firmware. All is good, right?

NOT, my cfg and users.dat files were not being recognized by the TFTP server....mainly because I had the 2 cfg file naming conventions mixed up. I finally corrected that, but then the licensing was still telling me I had an active token, even though I am only using the basic SIP feature set. Finally after 2 factory resets, the phone magically loaded all the config and users.dat files and reset, came back up and said "no request" for the licensing, which means I can use it indefinitely with basic call features on VOIP.MS SIP trunking.

I am not too flattered by the display on the 1220's, it's quite cluttered compared to the 11xx sets, but I guess for $45, I can't complain!

Do you want me to post those files for you?

The 1200 series phones aren't my favorites. The 1210 especially is ridiculous.

Avaya just released new SIP firmware the other day. 4.1.15 I think. You have a" more" softkey in when running against an IP Office. The rest was LLDP related.

I didn't know any non Nortel firmware could be on those phones. I'd guess it was some type of asterisk/trixbox firmware based on your description.

Hi Biv,

Why do you think the 1210 is ridiculous? Do you feel the same about the 1110 set? I think these sets are good for areas such as hallways, breakrooms, dorm rooms....that way, the entire campus of buildings can be VOIP enabled without having to run phone cable for the "poor man's" phone. The 1210 does have an oversized footprint that could be reduced for sure.

An interesting note on the 12xx and 11xx with the newer SIP formats. I found 2 items I consider glitches:

The Call Waiting (Buzz) tone hardly even beeps when you have another call come in on the phone, while you are on the phone.
Earlier firmware version had a tone that announced for at least 1 second. The second tone beeps (if you haven't picked up the call) considerably longer.

Also, if you receive an incoming call while you are on the phone, the 2nd line CLID information continues to flash even if the call goes into voice mail or was picked up at another extension. In fact, if you go through the Callers List and look through old calls, the CLID information continues to flash in the list too.

I assume these are not intentional. They are both quite annoying.

I'll send to my friend at Avaya as well.

The 1210's are fine for the areas you mention, but they look somewhat silly being in the same footprint as the 1220/1230's with that tiny display. Thats just my opinion though, and they do work fine. The 1110's look nicer, but come with the price tag to boot.

I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to the second line CLID in the SIP loads. I'll have to try that out one of these days.

Hi Biv,

I heard the 1210's and 1110's are no longer in production. I think that's a mistake on Avaya's part, as many areas need phones comparable to the T7100 or M7100 or M2006.

Also, can you tell me what happens when you are on a call and what happens when another call comes in? Do you get the infamous Nortel call waiting "buzz" from the speaker: a short beep that lets you know you have another call.

Thank you!

Joe
