11x17 Spread - Need pages together

I am trying to create an 11 x 17 2-sided spread That is pages 1 & 4 together and pages 2 & 3 together. I searched the forum and found that someone asked basically the same question:

>> I go to New > Document, make sure that facing pages is ticked and specify four pages. I click OK and InDesign creates a document consisting of a right, a spread and a left. No matter how I try to move the pages around I cannot get two spreads.

The response shown was this:

>>Go to the Numbering & Sections Options and start the document on an even number. All evens are left pages.

I tried that, but it doesn't do what I want it to. I tried starting the page numbering at 2. What am I doing wrong, or is there a different way?

Just create the normal 4 page (8.5 X 11) doc if this is going to the printer. They'll impose (put the pages in order for printing) the thing for the propper printing.

Depending on your version of indd you can impose the thing yourself by going to File menu/Inbooklet SE. Pick 2 Up Saddlestictch and inbooklet will do it for you. Make usre you check the "create new document" box so you don't lose the original. Professional printers usually prefer to do their own imposition so they can tweak as necessary.

Thank you for the response. That may suffice for this piece since I am not placing across the full width of pages 1 & 4.

However, I would like to know how to have the two spreads toghether, but still have them be 8.5x11 pages.

Any thought on that?

That is simply not how it works, and never has. You are talking about a 4 page booklet. Pgs 1 & $ are the front and back covers. The impositon software (like inbooklet) handles this, and would reorder all the page if teh document was 400 pages. Imagine trying to manually impose 400 pages rather than 4. You'd go crazy. AS a test make a new 120 page indd doc and try to figure out how to order the pages for propper two sided printing order. You'll quickly see how mind boggling difficult it is.

If you want to see the pages side by side, just open the new indd doc that was created by inbooklet. If you don't have inbooklet, go to Adobe's share site and search for the free script that will also impose documents.

Again, booklets have been designed this way since the beginning of desktop publishing.

Create New 6 pages Document, go to Pages palete, turn Allow Pages to Shuffle "off", delete 1-st page and the 6th page. O-la-la Done

Okay, I absolutely agree with you in regard to doing larger documents. In fact, if I were doing 8 pages, I would not consider wanting to do this, because I would certainly, as you suggested, use imposition software or leave it to the printer.

However, for this particular instance, I know what the pages are and I want to design across them and see them while I am doing it. It's just 4 pages.

There is a way.

In the Pages palette, create 5 (five) pages. Click the button at the upper left of the palette to access the fly-out menu. Unselect, or deselect the Allow Pages to Shuffle option. By creating 5 pages, you have created 2 spreads and the first page is by itself. Just take the first page that is by itself, and drag it to the trash. The other pages renumber 1 thru 4 and stay as 2 spreads because the pages do not shuffle.

This document breaks down the formular you use when creating printer spreads. it is so easy, everyone needs this file!
You can find it under Adobe.com, forums, go to Indesign and type in Printers spreads. The name of the file is Manually_imposing.pdf Then just download it to your desktop. Saved me hours.

I have searched the Adobe User forum for that PDF by Sandee and cannot find it. Is it in the Mac or Windows forum? and do you have an appoximate date or the name of the thread in which the reference occurs?
