At my new job I inherited the BCM400 (version 4.0.2.03a) which is new to me. It is the VoIP system. All phones are configured with static IP addresses.

We have couple of employees that work from home and do not need phones in the office. The way it’s being set up now is that there are 1140e phones sitting in the server room configured with those employees’ extensions and they are set up to forward all calls to those employees’ cell phones.
I was told that the BCM400 doesn’t support “virtual extensions” and the above setup is the only workaround possible.
After some studying, I was able to free those phones by checking ‘Keep DN alive’ box and disconnected them form the system. So, those extensions are still under ‘Active Sets’ and still forwarding all calls to cell phones but without the phones connected to the PBX.

Now I can’t use those phones with different extensions. Say, for new employees.
I use the **73639MAC## routine to reset the phones to factory defaults and it works.
However, after I configure phones with new IP addresses and they reboot, they automatically pick up their old extensions. So, those phones are “available” but they are useless…

What am I doing wrong?
Or perhaps what I am doing is stupid and doesn’t make any sense…
Please let me know.

It's doing that because the set's MAC address is still registered. You just have to deregister it.

Go into Resources>Telephony resources>IP sets. On the bottom screen, select the IP Terminal Details tab. Scroll through the entries and select the DN that's being assigned to that set and click on the Deregister button.

Yes, I know I can Deregister the DN and that will fix my problem.
But the gole is to use this DN as a 'virtual' extension and keep it live all the time because it is working DN and it is forwarding all calls to the cell phone.
If I Deregister this DN 2215, I can reuse the phone, but how can I set it up with the PBX again without a phone?

All you're doing is deregistering the set. You're not deleting or derestering the DN. By keeping the DN alive, you are in fact making it a virtual DN. The DN will work just like it would if it was assigned to a set.

to telcodog:
I wish it was that easy…
After I Deregistered the DN that was already configured as ‘Keep DN alive’, it was moved to the ‘Inactive DNs’ group and is ‘Not in service’ anymore.
Any other ideas please?

Did you go back to the IP details under the DN and make sure that the DN alive box is stll checked? Might be that the DN does have to be assigned to a set and will only work if the set is offline instead of being deregistered.

Yes, I confirmed the “Keep DN Alive” box was still checked.
In fact, that was the only box available under the “IP Terminal Details” tab after I deregistered the DN...
It looks like in order for this setup to work, I have to break the relationship between the MAC address of the set and the DN that was assigned to it. Or somehow to delete the MAC address from the PBX memory.
Is it possible? If not through the Element Manager, may be using the CLI like PUTTY?

I think you might have to assign the DN to a digital or analog set for the call forwarding to work. Just leave the set in the switchroom like you did when it was assigned to the IP set.
