I have a friend who has an 1110 on his home BCM. He went an upgraded the Unistim firmware off of the Avaya Website on his 1110 set and now the phone will not boot up. When rebooted, the Red and Blue LEDs appear and then the display is bright blue, but blank. No Avaya Logo appears. Any idea what he can do besides throw the phone away?

I have a couple with same symptom.

I thought it was because they probably had SIP firmware and not playing at all with the BCM.
I have yet to do your conversion trick back to Unistim, but now you make me wonder if I should even try.

Do you know what firmware he used and why for that matter?

All 1100 and 1200 series phones have BootC Loader in their ROM. Using BootC these phones can be recovered after a failed firmware update or some mishap like that.

You must first set up a TFTP server with an appropriate configuration file and firmware for your phone (described already on a number of threads).

With the TFTP server up and running, invoke BootC Loader using the following steps:
1. Power off the phone
2. Press and hold the 2 button and the UP arrow button
3. Power up the phone (either through PoE or power adapter) while the buttons above are depressed
4. Keep the buttons depressed for about 7 seconds while the phone is booting
On 1100 series phones, release the buttons when the blue and red lights go off
On 1200 series phones, release the buttons when "Loading BootC" is displayed
4. After releasing the buttons, the phone will display "Manual configuration". Press the four soft keys from left to right to configure the phone to download firmware from your TFTP server.

This procedure can also be used to change the firmware from SIP to UNISTIM.

ucxguy, that's great info!

Where do you get this stuff? LOL

The BootC procedure is described in Nortel documentation (and nowadays in Avaya documentation) for CS1000 - specifically in the document "Nortel Communication Server 1000 - IP Phones Fundamentals":
(see page 655 in this document)

Avaya provides similar information in their IP Office documentation:

On a related note, I recently flashed an Avaya 1230 IP phone to SIP firmware. I found that I had to reset the phone to factory defaults before it would operate correctly. I also had to access the BootC loader in the phone to tell it to auto load all settings. Finally, I created a new config file and user.dat file, placed them in the TFTP server folder, and booted up the phone. It found the files and rewrote the config settings. It then worked perfectly as a SIP phone. A lot of trouble to go through just to make a phone call. [wink]
