I have a CS1k PBX and am using a 1140e telephone with the 1100 series expansion. I have the 48v power supply plugged in but still no backlighting. does anyone know how to turn it on or is it just suppose to come on when the power supply is attached?

You need to enter this thread on the CS1000 forum. I have this below.

Nortel Product Bulletin P-2006-0338-Global contains the details .

This product bulletin contains important information for accessing the most up-to-date firmware, and information on Nortel’s new Expansion Module for IP Phone 1100 Series when used with the Communication Server 1000 (formerly Succession 1000) Release 4.5 and later.

Call Server Compatibility and Requirements

CS 1000 4.5
- X21 4.50W
- IP Line 4.50.88 or later
- SS 4.50.88 or later

The firmware version for the host phone must be 0624C39.bin or later for 1120E, 0625C39 or later for 1140E, and 0627C39 or later for 1150E

Problem Description
There is a potential failure scenario when IP Phones are deployed using both Power over Ethernet (PoE) and the local AC power supply at the same time to provide power to the IP Phone. Although dual power input is not a recommended configuration across an entire deployment of IP Phones, it has come to our attention that some customers have used this approach as part of their deployment strategy. It has been observed that providing this dual power input can result in damage to the phone in some
scenarios.
Phones that are powered with both PoE and the local AC power supply at the same time will function normally and pose no safety hazard, but are at risk for damage in scenarios when the AC power fails and is restored.

Expected Scope
Note that this dual power input issue has been observed with the IP Phone 1120E and 1140E only at this time.
Further investigation is ongoing.

Recommended Action
We advise that customers avoid using both Power over Ethernet and local AC power supplies when designing and implementing IP Phone deployments. This dual power input approach is not a recommended configuration for network-wide powering strategies.
Note: One previous exception for dual powering is when using the IP Phone 1100 Series Expansion Module (EM) with backlight mode enabled with the IP Phone 1120E or IP Phone 1140E. Local AC powering is required for the IP Phone and EM for the EM backlight to be on, and for this configuration it is advised to power the IP Phone and EM using the AC adapter only.
