Hi,

Just moved to a new location a small (5) PC network.

2 XP, 3 Win98, 3Com Hub

Whilst using MS Access to query tables on the new XP box (2.8ghz, 1meg memory etc) users say its slower than before the move.

Using Performance Monitor on the 2 XP boxes I can see both show 100mps send 10 mps rec.

All machines have 10/100 NIC set at 100 full duplex.

Hub lights show 100 full duplex for all PC connections, (also have ISDL modem in port 8 for internet).

Unable to stop the network till the weekend when I plan to bring up one machine at a time and test.

Any thoughts on what could be the cause?

Thanks,

Dale

Hubs only operate at 10 mbs, Half duplex. Set the ethernet adapter properties from auto to 10 mbs at Half duplex and things will speed up considerably.

there are 100 meg hubs but all hubs are half duplex, I would set the PCs back to auto or default and see if the problem goes away.

Setting the PC to Full never works right unless it is a managed switch where you can set the port to Full as well.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks for the tips.

Tried setting 100mps half duplex, 1 PC got to 20 rec but all others slowed even more.

A "Tech" friend had a look and claimed the hub was a switch, set all PC's to auto detect and showed that doing this a copy and paste from PC to PC we were getting 80 to 100 send and receive. Very fast.

But the MS Access query which query's a table that has 1/2hr time slots each day for 20 techs for up to 18 months ahead (a large table) is still slow and still shows 100 sent 10 recd.

Still stuck, will try Access forums.

Thanks.

If it is a switch and the adapters are capable of 100-Full duplex the set it manually to that value. Many NICs fail in "auto" negotiation with switches.

Have you looked at the NIC settings on the Access server machine?

I must also note that if you are looking at the statistics from the little tray icon to measure your speed, or even through the WMI display, these are often erronous. The quality of the statistics displayed are completely tied to the quality of the NIC adapter driver. Look to the chipset manufacturer (Ipconfig /all will tell you the chipset of the NIC) and download a newer driver set for the NIC.

if RealTek: if ADMTek:
if other do a search. This can make a profound difference.
