I have 2 separate physical lans in 1 building. I have a new file server going in and both lans need access. Can 1 server with 2 nics exist on 2 lans by simply giving each nic an address on the 2 respective lans and then phsically patching them in? otherwise I assume I need a router between the 2. Is there a cheap linksys that can do this for me or do I need to go with a more serious router?

Sure, just make sure you only assign 1 gateway on your 2 nic cards and your fine.

Thanks. Then I suppose I would use routing and remote access to setup any special routing I would need?

2 separate LANs, they currently dont talk to each other at all? If that true, then you have to separate domains, one for each LAN? If thats true how are you going to control access to the file server, it can only exist in one domain or the other? You going to setup a trust between the domains? I would probably put in a router, then setup the trust. Or maybe i dont understand your topology very well.

Yes you can do it and then the server can act as a bridge too. Permissions can be a pain but it is possible.
