I have ACS R6 that has been working for 9 months. yesterday customer called saying that when an incoming call hits the system, the phones ring once, they pick up and there is no-one there. So I called over several times, I would get 1-2 rings and then some static and then get disconnected. This did not happen every time though. i tried all three CO lines and it happened on every line, but not always. System is a standalone acs 6 with only 3 lines and 6 phones, it's on UPS and grounded.

I am planning on replacing the ACS, but what could this be?

It sounds like a classic "ring-trip condition". It is caused by a high resistance short from Tip to Ring (or Ring to Ground). It is not low enough to short out the line and take it off hook, but when the high voltage ring comes in, it will conduct enough to "answer" the call.

Now, you say it happens on ALL three lines? Disconnect the lines from the Partner and call them again, see if it still happens. If yes, it is definatly on the Telco side of the equation (allowing for any cabling between the protector and the Partner - eliminate that as well if it still happens with them disconnected from the Partner.)

If it only happens when connected to the Partner, and it happens on ALL lines, but not every time, there may be a device connected as an extension that is answering, or even a faulty extension port. At a phone, program as many Auto Intercom buttons as you can, call in, and when the problem occurs, see if one of the Auto Intercom lights comes on. If not, and you couldn't put ALL the extensions on buttons, reprogram the buttons to see the next "block" of extensions. Perhaps you will find the culprit that way.

One other thing I have seen, but usually only on Partner II's (You said you have an ACS, and I doubt that you have an ASA/DXD card). I have seen a power failure scramble the recording on ASA and DXD into complete static. When it answers, the caller only hears the static. In this case, simply re-record the ASA and DXD messages.

Hope these help!!

I would also call the telco and see if they can test things on, and from their end without coming out. If they come out they will charge you, but many times they can see shorts, and determine if it is on their end.

thank you both. I will see about it tomorrow.

that auto intercom test worked great, i set up the auto intercom (i call them busy lamps) and I could see extn 14 light up each time. I could see the wall cord was pinched inside a drawer So I changed the wall cord and the phone, now it works right.
